with Ven. Angie Muir
in-person at the center Sunday, November 5, 2023 10:00am – 11:00am PST (Pacific Standard Time) Ocean of Compassion is pleased to announce the beginning of a new cycle of the FPMT Discovering Buddhism Program. Venerable Angie Muir will start off the program with the first module “Mind and Its Potential” in January 2024.
The program will follow the official FPMT Discovering Buddhism curriculum. The aim of the Discovering Buddhism program is to give participants a solid footing in the practice of Mahayana Buddhism. By engaging in this program, participants will gain an experiential taste of the Buddha's teachings, some retreat experience, and the skills they need to make their lives most meaningful. The Discovering Buddhism program consists of 14 modules. It is an estimated 2-year course for which participants may receive a certificate of completion upon fulfillment of all requirements. All are welcome to participate in this program regardless of certification interest. Although each module can be taken independently, participants are encouraged to attend this program from the beginning, as the modules build on one another. The purpose of this orientation is to give prospective participants the opportunity to meet Venerable Angie to learn about her teaching approach. The Discovering Buddhism teaching sessions will be offered online on Tuesdays 7:00pm - 8:30pm. Practice sessions at the end of each module will be offered on weekends with an option to attend in-person at the center, or online. For remote participants, the center will host an online Discovering Buddhism Open House in December 2023. |
Born in Scotland, in 1970, Venerable Angie Muir obtained a Bachelor's Degree in 1992. Feeling disillusioned with her prospective career path and life ahead of her, she left Scotland and combined travelling with work in Asia for 3 years until in 1995 she felt a calling to go to India to explore meditation and find her life path. Within a few months she “had the incredible fortune due to some previous karma” to discover Tibetan Buddhism, and meet her main spiritual teacher Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche (of almost 30 years) and become ordained.
Venerable Angie has been a Buddhist nun for over 25 years. During this time, she served at Lama Zopa Rinpoche's residences in the U.S. for 13 years. In addition to doing various personal retreats, she has offered service, teaching, and leading meditation at other FPMT centers. |
