Holiday Party

Vegetarian Potluck, Raffle, and Movie

Saturday, December 13, 2014
6:00pm - 9:00pm
Where
  • Ocean of Compassion (Gyalwa Gyatso) Buddhist Center

Why
  • This is an opportunity for our community to gather, socialize, meet fellow members (perhaps for the first time), and have fun!
  • It is a night to celebrate and rejoice that we have a beautiful Center where we can learn and practice.
  • It is an opportunity for giving: our ongoing food drive barrels will be located outside near our front door so everyone can bring a non-perishable food item to help those less fortunate in our extended community.

Potluck
  • It is requested that members bring a vegetarian main dish, side dish, or dessert to share. Beverages and eating utensils, etc. will be provided.
  • We ask that you do not bring food that must be prepared at the Center; there are no cooking facilities and we have a “fragile” electrical system which will allow only a very few plug-ins. If food must be warmed in our microwave, please bring a microwave safe dish.
Holiday Party
Raffle
  • A raffle will be held and many gifts are available, including gift certificates for holistic health care assessments, posters, books, hand-made malas, and other items too numerous to list. Winners will be given a choice of several different items.
  • Raffle tickets will be sold at the Center until immediately before the drawing for $5 apiece, and 5 tickets for $20.
  • Giveaways to those who fail to win a gift.

Movie
  • The movie I Am by Tom Shadyac will be shown.

Movie
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I Am is a 2010 American documentary film written, directed, and narrated by Tom Shadyac. The documentary explores Shadyac's personal journey after a 2007 bicycle accident, "the nature of humanity" and "world's ever-growing addiction to materialism."

In the film, Shadyac conducts interviews with scientists, religious leaders, environmentalists and philosophers including Desmond Tutu, Noam Chomsky, Lynne McTaggart, Elisabet Sahtouris, David Suzuki, Howard Zinn, and Thom Hartmann. The film asks two central questions: What’s Wrong With the World? and What Can We Do About it?. It is about "human connectedness, happiness, and the human spirit", and explores themes including Darwinism, Western mores, loneliness, the economy, and the drive to war. The documentary includes animated scenes explaining scientific concepts, as well as clips from the films Wall Street and It's a Wonderful Life.
