A Six-week Skill-building Workshop

Stress has a profound impact on our physical, emotional, and mental health.  The good news is that we do not need to be a victim of stress.  Research substantiates that quieting the mind and relaxing the body on a regular basis improves the immune system and can reduce symptoms of hypertension.  Mindfulness skills and strategies are taught to reduce the effect of stress and to enable us to participate in managing our health.

This class deals with key issues that contribute to stress.  Class topics include:
  • the mind/body connection
  • dealing with worry
  • attitude and stress
  • listening and communication
  • and becoming a stress-hardy person.
Home practice techniques and written exercises will be given on how to increase mindfulness, including meditation and a mindfulness movement practice.  Please wear comfortable clothing.
Sharon Allen

Objective

This class is a brief introduction to some of the salient elements that contribute to stress, and to mindfulness practices and skills that can help to reduce the negative impact of stress on the mind and body.

Outcome

Participants will:
  • Be able to identify the cause and affect of key stressors
  • Gain new understanding of their own patterns of thinking and behavior
  • Learn the importance of the mind/body relationship
  • Learn practical mindfulness skills to reset distorted or unhealthy reaction patterns
  • Be able to create personal lifestyle choices and intentions that build on a broader understanding of stress

Class Guidelines

This is a six-week educational class, meeting for 1½ hours each time.  Your regular attendance will be of optimal benefit to you.  You will need a journal or notebook to write in as part of the class. The class format will include mindful movement practices.  Dress for ease of movement of the body.  Bring whatever you need to be comfortable, such as water or back support.

Each class will cover a different key topic on stress and its impact on your life and will include pertinent mindfulness skills and techniques to be practiced at home in between class meetings.  Since you may be learning new skills, practicing is essential.

Your full participation in the class exercises, while challenging at times, will produce the greatest insights and results for you.  Some exercises will be written and personal (for your eyes only), others will be in the form of group or partner interaction.  No one is required to do more than they are comfortable with, but you are encouraged to work at your edge while in this supportive environment.

Participants are requested to use skillful listening when others share and to hold any information offered as confidential.  Judging, offering advice, and criticizing are to be withheld.  Most of us already have these skills highly developed and overused.  What we are learning to do, in part, is to turn down the volume of those voices inside.

This is not a therapy class.  If you have any questions about the class, do not hesitate to contact me.
